MS. APRIL MENDIOLA
Ms. Mendiola is an alumna of AUSD and overjoyed at the opportunity to give back to the community that helped shape her. An active Soprano, Ms. Mendiola performs regularly and teaches private voice lessons throughout the San Gabriel Valley and surrounding communities. She earned a Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance from California State University, Long Beach, where she completed a thesis on vocal pedagogy and preserving the voice by understanding the basic science of singing. Ms. Mendiola's teaching philosophy is rooted in kindness and compassion. She believes that students can do anything that they are taught, and as a music educator, she aims to guide every student in discovering their creative potential.
MKHS VOCAL SCHOLARS (ADVANCED CHOIR)

Participation in this ensemble cultivates vocal and musicianship skills to prepare students to audition for the Vocal Scholars or A Cappella Choir at the end of the school year. Students will also learn team-building skills in a safe and supportive environment.
AZTEC CHORUS (MIXED CHOIR)
An entry level, non-auditioned, mixed ensemble performing accessible music of various genres and styles. Participation in this ensemble cultivates vocal and musicianship skills to prepare students to audition for the Vocal Scholars or A Cappella Choir at the end of the school year. "A KEPPELLA!" (A CAPPELLA CHOIR)
An auditioned, 16/18-voice, mixed, a cappella choir that rehearses twice a week after school. Repertoire will include contemporary and vocal jazz genres, and vocal styles include pop, scat, rap, beat-boxing, and vocal percussion. This ensemble requires a high level of discipline and musicianship.
All of the ensembles in the Mark Keppel High School Vocal Music Academy aim to provide every student with a meaningful, creative education that will enrich their academic journeys. Students will be challenged in ways they may not have been before, but they will be surrounded by a supportive, musical collective that will always be there to lift them up.
SOLO VOICE TRAINING
Students with a desire for additional vocal instruction are welcome to receive training from Ms. Mendiola for FREE. This is available to ALL MKHS students, whether or not they participate in any of the ensembles. The only requirement is that they become a member of the Vocal Music Club. Interested students will be in a rotating schedule for 30-minute slots on selected days after school. Students are encouraged to audition for the Southern California Vocal Association's Honor Choir as well as other solo and ensemble opportunities that become available. Ms. M. will prepare students for these auditions. Ms. Mendiola will also help prepare students that wish to audition for collegiate and other post-secondary programs.
